Artist Statement
The sculptural tableaus I create are inspired through research and interpersonal relationships. Evolving from historical data, personal symbols and mythologies. Working with vintage objects, discarded materials and domestic belongings owned by women, I act as a collaborator. Crafting connections between the historical research and an object’s intended use, unique creative processes emerge. The objects become the foundation for peculiar explorations.
Using a variety of textile processes and domestic trades, I respond to the formal elements of domestic objects. Investigating scale, texture, and shape while keeping in mind the intention. Today, these objects are experienced in very different ways compared to the generation of women who originally interacted with them. Much of the subject matter touches upon storytelling concerning power plays in relationships, self image, isolation, vulnerability and beauty in the mundane.
Ultimately, my quest is to create an immersive environment that tells a story, or creates a talking point, all the while honoring the domestic laborers of the past. Through the process, I aim to provoke certain questions: What role do women want to play in society today? Who do we want to be? What kind of relationships do we want to have? Who are our role models? What are we leaving for the next generation and how will these objects define herstory? I hope to discuss the context of materials within the shifting boundaries that define our relationships and our identities.
