Collecting Materials
During the summer of 2019 I ventured into Orange, Texas to assist clearing an abandoned house. The home had been abandoned and fallen into disrepair several years ago, a busted water heater caused massive damage in one room but that was the least of the problems. An elderly couple lived here for an undetermined amount of time before being taken ward of the state. There is no telling what treasures this house holds, but after sorting through rooms, closets, shelves and a couple boxes, I had all the materials necessary to return to the studio.
With the materials sanitized and sorted, assemblages began to form and create series. A plethora of billiard balls serve as an accumulation of time spent outside the home, hours and day, possibly weeks or months of life spent in dark smokey pool halls. Who knows how many hustles happened. A FINE BONE CHINA tea set from England, lovingly displayed in a curio cabinet may possibly hold the secrets. Gallons of gossip may have flowed through the spout. Buckets and bins of partially complete embroidered florals and baskets, a silent nod to a finite amount of time.
